Artist's Statement

As an artist, I am constantly challenging my technical abilities to compose paintings that both create mood and awaken emotion.  I approach paper with large, dominant color washes, using the largest brushes possible; then work down to the finer details in the foreground and around the center of interest.

Capturing the Cape’s light, especially in the spring and fall when the air is clear, is something I continually endeavor to do.  The light is ever changing.  Long shadows form and move endlessly, as your brain and camera’s eye try to absorb as much information about the landscape as possible.  One time light may be shining in the face of a boy fishing from a dock in Orleans, or shadowing a boat making its way to port in Provincetown or back lighting a marsh in Harwich.  The light invites you into the painting.
